Chiswick’s High Road Auctions celebrates a successful Fine Art & Selected Antiques sale
Friday 3rd June 2011
High Road Auctions celebrated the results of its Antiques, Interiors and Fine Art Sale held on 31st May at its Chiswick showroom.
Amongst the exciting items on sale was an Augustus John RA etching of an ‘Old Man’ (dated 1902) which sold to a private buyer for £1,300, more than 5 times the estimate of £250. This is believed to be a world record auction price for this particular etching.
The tension was quickly matched when five telephone bidders and three room bidders competed for three oils on canvas by London-born artist, Professor Ken Howard RA, which together realised a hammer price of £8,000.
The first lot, ‘St Marks, Venice’, was eventually sold to a phone bidder for £5,200, more than double the estimate of £2,000. ‘Sailing Boats in the Harbour’ sold for £1,200 – four times the estimate, and ‘A Beach Scene with Figures and Bathers’ sold for £1,600, over six times the estimate of £250.
The pieces were among over 60 works of art on sale. Other works of note which attracted bidders included a 19th century Central European icon of Madonna and child in the Byzantine style, hammer price £800; plus two rare pieces from the private collection of Sir Peter Blake – ‘Fat Boy’ from the ‘Slide Show’ portfolio 1970 and a very limited edition print of HM Queen Elizabeth, signed twice, which sold for £800 and £2,000 respectively.

Robert McCarthy, Director, comments: “I’m very pleased with the results from the sale. Viewing was busy and we’d had an exceptional number of enquiries on lots in the run-up to Tuesday night. Turnout on the evening was high, especially from Chiswick-based buyers. It’s pleasing to see High Road Auctions firmly on the map as a destination for both private buyers and dealers to buy and sell exceptional quality works of Fine Art and antiques alike.”
